ABOUT THE CREATOR OF OPOAA
About the Creator Camilla Warren

I Starting research on my Family Tree in early 1999, and one of the things that inspired me, was all of the Old Photographs. Many of the photographs I obtained was from relatives and friends. Some of the people I knew, and most I didn't.
A photograph that I had in my possession connected me with a cousin over an genealogy internet forum/message board. We had never met and the photograph we shared was of our great grandmother.

The old photographs I obtain from family members; R Henderson and D. Howard, inspired me to launch the first African American interaction site of it's kind in April 2002 for Old Photographs of African Americans (Opoaa). OPOAA was updated to (Old Photographs of African Americans-Unknown Faces) in June of 2002. After doing research via the internet and  viewing other genealogy sites, I did not  find any exclusive African American sites that offered a free service of this type.  The Library of Congress has such photographs.
Being a member of  ancestry.com a well known site at the time, I started posting the links to opoaa.com onto their site.  It inspired them to launch such interaction with old photographs. Tons of valuable information there. (A paid subscription site).

Hopefully we will continue to provide these old photographs for your research, when submitted by our visitors.
A free service.

Since my journey into family history and old photographs,
I've discovered that I have many more relatives than I ever
thought possible! And even more photographs to Identify.
